How To Help Restore Men’s Relationships
How To Restore Men's Relationships

Date

Repairing relationships broken by addiction can often be a long, emotionally difficult process. One of the casualties of a battle with addiction is the trail of damaged relationships it leaves behind. However, with the right kind of resources and support, repairing relationships after addiction is possible. Here are four ways you can help the recovered men around you rebuild their social foundation.

1. Set Realistic Expectations

Any newly sober individual will feel a sense of optimism about their progress in early sobriety and be ready to revisit past relationships. Any action taken toward rebuilding the relationship is a victory, and these small steps must be celebrated.

2. Trust Will Take Time To Rebuild

In the past where trust has been betrayed repeatedly, rebuilding it will be a long process. It is important to encourage the recovered to reach out and begin the journey of mending bridges.

3. Learn Healthy Communication Methods

Communication is one of the most important methods, and it includes both talking and listening. Effective communication techniques lower the risk of disputes and teach the individual what to do if the conversation gets too heated.

4. Eliminate Unhealthy Relationships

Unfortunately, not all relationships are healthy and positive. People who are still using drugs and alcohol no longer have a place in a newly sober individual’s life. Neither do those who are, or have been, abusive toward them. It is important to identify who may trigger a relapse and ensure they are no longer present.
